ATLANTA, Georgia – Led by a career-high 15 points and six assists from junior guard Madison Raque, UNCW earned its first road win of the season by edging Georgia State, 72-66, at the Georgia State Sports Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who were playing their second consecutive road game, improved to 2-1 on the season. Meanwhile, the Panthers had their record evened at 2-2.
One of four UNCW players to score in double figures, Raque made 5-of-13 shots from the field, including a 4-for-9 effort from three-point range. She also grabbed four rebounds while playing a team-high 36 minutes.
Freshman guard Timber Tate came off the bench to contribute a season-high 14 points by shooting 5-for-9 from the field, including a 4-for-7 showing from beyond the arc.
Junior guard Diamond Willis and redshirt junior forward Jenny DeGraaf each tallied 13 points for the Seahawks. DeGraaf also added five rebounds and two assists.
Freshman guard Jada Lewis paced Georgia State with 14 points, including 15 in the second half.
How It Happened: The Seahawks used their best shooting performance of the early season to defeat Georgia State. UNCW connected on 49.1 percent of its field goal attempts, including an 11-for-22 performance from beyond the arc. The Seahawks also connected on 11-of-13 field goal attempts in the second quarter to build a 39-31 edge.
Game Notes: UNCW has won the last six meetings over Georgia State and leads the all-time series by an 11-7 margin … The teams were meeting for the first time since the 2012-13 season when they were Colonial Athletic Association rivals … UNCW hit a season-high 11 three-point field goals, marking the first time the Seahawks have notched 10 or more made three-pointers since Mar. 9, 2013, when they shot 12-for-29 from long range at Northeastern … The Seahawks also reached the 70-point plateau for the first time since Mar. 4, 2015, a 76-75 triumph over Hofstra … Led by a career-high eight assists from redshirt senior guard Jasmine Steele, the Seahawks recorded 21 assists on 28 made field goals … The 21 assists are the most for UNCW since Jan. 22, 2012 at Old Dominion (22 assists) … The Seahawks earned their first road win since Jan. 10, 2016, a 52-49 verdict at Towson.
