Severe Weather Moves Through Columbus County

MAY 21, 2005 -- Buildings are damaged and trees are down after a tornado touched down in Columbus County Friday.

A line of powerful storms moved through the county between 6:00 and 7:00 Friday night.

Some of the worst damage happened near the Mollie community. That's a rural area not far from Whiteville.

After taking a look at the damage Saturday, the National Weather Service confirmed an F-1 tornado did touch down in Mollie, on Walter Todd Road. With an F-1 tornado, winds can reach up to 112 miles per hour.

Residents in Columbus and Brunswick County also had to deal with power outages and flooding in some areas. No injuries were reported.
