Topless Sunbathers Raising Concerns

MAY 19, 2005 -- The phone is ringing at the Topsail Beach Police Department after a story in the Star-News about topless sunbathers.

The newspaper discovered it's legal for a woman to go topless at Topsail Beach.

Police Chief Rickey Smith says he's received calls from some angry homeowners and from others wanting to make sure there's no law banning women from baring their breasts in public.

Smith says he has beefed up beach patrols, but there's been no noticeable increase in the number of topless women.
