WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) -

Hundreds gathered for the fifth annual Out of Darkness walk at Wrightsville Beach Park to raise awareness for suicide prevention Saturday afternoon.

The goal of the event is to shed light on the importance of suicide awareness. Event organizers want and encourage people at the walk to talk about tough issues surrounding suicide. The organizers goal was to reach $38,000.

One of the walkers at the event, Karin Brunt, lost her daughter to suicide in 2012. She participated in the walk in hopes of bringing people together to spread awareness on the issue.

"There is a stigma attached to suicide and until we get passed that we are not going to be able to help anybody," Brunt said. "Even people who feel suicidal don't really want to talk unless they know they have been involved because they will think they are crazy."

Karin and her family started a foundation in remembrance of her daughter called the U'Nique Community Fund. All proceeds of the fund go to UNCW.

There are several ways to be involved in suicide awareness efforts. You can make a donation to the American Foundation For Suicide Prevention. There is also a gala that will be held on Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. All of the proceeds will go to suicide awareness and prevention. For more information, call 910-262-2560.
