WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW landed three players in double-figure kills, but James Madison's Janey Goodman, the conference's preseason player-of-the-year, totaled 30 kills as the Dukes edged past UNCW, 3-2 (21-15, 28-26, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11), on Saturday in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action at Hanover Hall.
The Dukes raised their record to 17-10 overall and 9-5 in the conference with their sixth straight win. The Seahawks, who fell to 5-5 at home this season, saw their record slide to 15-11 and 5-9.
Goodman was dominant in the second set with 10 of her 30 kills as the Dukes topped the Seahawks, 28-26, to even the match at 1-all. Joining Goodman in double-digit kills was Bryn Recker with 12.
Kristen Powell and Nicole Lott had 11 kills apiece while Sydney Brock added 10. Lott finished with 15 digs on the evening and became the third Seahawk all-time to total 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.
Maddie Kline paced the Seahawks 19 digs, but JMU finished with a 103-87 advantage in digs, thanks to Austin Taylor's 39.
JMU's Taylor Gail held match-high honors with seven blocks as the Dukes out blocked the conference's top blocking team, the Seahawks, 11-9.
How it happened: The Seahawks came out fast in the opening two sets, hitting above .250 both times, but in the third set, UNCW hit -.103 with 10 hitting errors in the set. UNCW did not hit above .150 in either the fourth or fifth sets. JMU, meanwhile, saved its best set for the fifth with a .438 hitting average (8-1-16).
Notes: Both teams finished with 12 service errors ... The Dukes swept the season series from the Seahawks ... Alyssa Desjardins finished with a double-double of 25 assists and 14 digs while Lott also fashioned a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs ... Recker (12k/17d) and setter Tilbe Yaglioglu (38a/14d) had double-doubles for JMU ... UNCW dropped to 4-4 in five-setters while the Dukes improved to 2-1 ... The loss moved the Seahawks a match and a half behind Delaware, who plays Hofstra at home on Sunday, for the final CAA tournament berth.
