MAY 18, 2005 -- Just days before a Wilmington soldier is laid to rest, people are stopping to honor the young man.

Sgt. Mac Smith was serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when was killed by an explosion near his convoy last week.  He was 22 years old.

Now, a memorial book is open at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home on Oleander Drive for people to write their condolences.  You can also extend your condolences on-line by following this link: http://www.mem.com/display/biography.asp?ID=848260

Smith was a graduate of New Hanover High School where he spent four years in ROTC. He also played lacrosse and football.

His funeral is Saturday at 1:00 at Saint Paul's Lutheran Church. That service is public. There will be a private burial following.

    The Mississippi Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who ran away from the scene of a deadly crash in George County. Three children were killed in the crash. Troopers said a green 2003 Kia Optima was heading east on Highway 198, east of Depot Road, shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday.
