UNCW Press Release

RICHMOND, Virginia – Led by junior forward Serenity Waters and senior midfielder Moa Jarl, UNCW had five players selected to the 2016 All-Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer teams.
Waters and Jarl earned Second-Team All-CAA notice and senior defender Madison Melnick garnered Third-Team accolades. Freshman defender Ashley Johnson received a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team while senior midfielder Kennedy Ulrich was named as the Seahawks’ representative on the All-Academic Team.
“Congratulations to all of the award winners,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “The league race was very tight this year and I am so proud of our team for earning the number four seed and a home game [in the CAA Championship].
“As a team sport, it is always challenging to award individual honors and even more so this season. Our top four finish was truly a team effort from every single player on our roster. I am excited for our honorees, but as our ‘team first’ culture dictates, we all share in these honors. I know Serenity, Madison, Moa, Ashley and Kennedy share these awards with their teammates.”
The Seahawks’ leading scorer with nine goals and seven assists, Waters ranks fourth in the CAA with 25 points. A starter in all 19 games, the Sharpsburg, Ga., product was selected as CAA Co-Player-of-the-Week on Oct. 24 after leading UNCW to wins over William & Mary and Elon. She also posted a goal and an assist in the same game three times.
Jarl also started all 19 games for the Seahawks as a senior, scoring two goals with four assists. The Gothenburg, Sweden, product ranked second on the team by playing 1,798 minutes. A four-year starter for the Seahawks, she finished her career with five goals and 11 assists and started 69-of-75 games.
A starter in 16-of-17 contests, Melnick finished the season as the team’s third-leading scorer with four goals and two assists. She scored two goals in a 4-2 victory over Furman on Sept. 11, and also netted goals in victories over UMBC and Hofstra. The Mason, Ohio, native tallied seven goals with five assists in 58 games at UNCW after transferring from Cincinnati following her freshman season.
Johnson, a newcomer from Cornelius, N.C., started 15-of-16 games as a freshman and helped the Seahawk defense hold opponents to just 21 goals in 16 games, tying for third in the CAA.
Ulrich, who started all 19 games as a senior, was named as the Seahawks’ All-Academic selection after scoring a goal with two assists. The Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada, native was a CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First-Team selection as a junior and carries an impressive 3.816 grade point average in biology.
The Seahawks finished the season with a 10-5-4 record, marking their second straight 10-win season.
