WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The Chi Pi fraternity at UNCW took off their shoes and donned high heels to raise money for the rape crisis center at Coastal Horizons.

In between classes, Chancellor's Walk was full of heads turning at the sight of the fraternity members walking around in heels. Justin Ammons wore the heels and didn't mind the stares he got. He said that's the first step towards bringing change.

"Most of it is trying to get people to stop for a second and be like 'oh wait they are wearing heels,'" said Ammons. "Then we have that ability to talk to them and get them to hear us out and hopefully donate to our cause."

Coastal Horizons Center provides professional services for sexual assault victims including 24-hour crisis response and individual counseling.

This is the second year Ammon's fraternity walked around UNCW with the heels on but the first time they partnered up with Phi Mu, a sorority on campus. Ammons said the discomfort from wearing the heels for hours was well worth the chance it provided to spread awareness for sexual assault.

"It's really nothing at all for us to be in a little bit of pain from wearing heels for a long time to get people to notice us and really kind of hear out our cause," said Ammons.
