BURGAW, NC (WECT) -

Members of the Burgaw Fire Department will celebrate a milestone anniversary this weekend - 80 years.

The town of Burgaw was incorporated in 1879, but it was not until 1936 when the Burgaw Fire Department was formed.

Today, the town employs the fire chief and several other positions. And the department averages about 600 calls a year. But just like in those early days, Burgaw still counts heavily on volunteers for fire protection.

"Our personnel put in a lot of time and effort, especially when you look and see they are volunteers, they all have careers elsewhere, they come in here and give us their time to benefit the residents of Burgaw as well as the Pender County central fire district," said Allen Wilson, Chief of the Burgaw Fire Department. "We have some members who put in two, three, even four hundred hours in training, and that is not counting the emergency responses."

Even though Burgaw is just four square miles, the department serves all of central Pender County, and that includes the area along Highway 53 East and Croomsbridge Road that suffered flooding from the hurricane.

"Everything settled down for a little while, but once the rivers started to rise, then the focus started to shift to the flooding on east side of the county with the rivers and we assisted Pender EMS and Fire with their rescue efforts on the Northeast Cape Fear River," Wilson explained.

One of the newest pieces of equipment is a tanker that only hauls water, but it is needed since the department covers a vast amount of central Pender County.

And that tanker, plus all of the other trucks and firefighting equipment will be on display, along with food and activities for kids and adults at the Burgaw Fire Department headquarters this Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
