BURGAW, NC (WECT) -

For newly discharged Marine, Alexander Whittington, a bad day used to be dodging bullets in Afghanistan, but now his main concern is his flooded out home.

“I have hope,” said Whittington. “I have it in my heart that things are going to be okay.”

The Gateway Community Church, in Burgaw, has become ground zero for relief supplies in Pender County. Since Friday, Oct. 14, the church has seen more than 500 families come in needing assistance.

“My heart aches; it’s broken,” said Pastor Ted Mercer. “I feel for everyone coming through the door, but I’m glad we’re able to help.”

The church is providing people with everything from food and clothing to simple toiletries.

Gateway has the supplies coming in every day, but what they desperately need are volunteers.

“We need the help to unload the trucks,” said Pastor Mercer. “Everything from stocking supplies, to helping families in our lines, get a little one on one attention.”

Gateway Community Church’s relief efforts are every Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
