WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Richard Neal and his fiancé, Brooke Briza, plan to ride out Hurricane Matthew at Frying Pan Tower, a privately-owned surplus Coast Guard Light Station located 34 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

The light tower is accessible by helicopter and by boat.

Neal said they've been working over the past few years to restore Frying Pan Tower so that it will last another 50 years.

According to Neal, a January 2010 onsite inspection by an engineering firm contracted by the Coast Guard determined the helipad platform can support a helicopter and that the entire structure, while in need of repair was structurally sound.
