WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

More than 500 people, dressed in pink, attended the 19th annual Pink Ribbon luncheon Thursday.

The event is a fundraiser for the Pink Ribbon project that provides comfort bags to cancer patients and free mammograms for women who can't afford them.

Kristen Armstrong, ex-wife of former seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was the keynote speaker.

Kristen talked about what she describes as one of the lowest points in her life -- her divorce in 2003. The couple had twins and another child, all under the age of three when Lance left the marriage.

She says her family and friends helped her through. She encouraged women dealing with breast cancer or any devastating medical diagnosis to look up and look out for support.

"Well I think its important to remember that you're not alone in those moments," Kristen said. "It think its important to remember you have strength within you that comes from a higher power that's going to take care of you and that there are people who love you and who are also going to take care of you. And you need to be strong and healthy to take care of them."

Kristen is now the author of several books including Happily Ever After: Walking with Peace and Courage through a Year of Divorce.
