Candidates' forum: Susi Hamilton and Gerald Benton running for NC18 House seat

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The District 18 seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives covers parts of New Hanover and Brunswick counties. Democrat Susi Hamilton is seeking her fourth term in the seat. She is the CEO of Hamilton Planning, a consulting firm in Wilmington. Republican Gerald Benton is challenging Hamilton in her run for re-election. Benton is from Leland, and is a disabled Army veteran.

The two candidates have different views on many issues, including how to rebuild North Carolina’s image and recover lost jobs in the wake of businesses and organizations leaving the state because of the controversial House Bill 2.

"The first thing we're going to do is to push to repeal HB2 from the books,” said Hamilton, who told the audience inside the New Hanover County Senior Resources Center that she voted against HB2 when it passed during a special session earlier this year. “We're not going to wait on a lengthy legal process while North Carolina is bleeding jobs, that's just foolish," she added.

"I don't think there is an image problem,” Benton countered during the question and answer part of the forum. “I think this is a joke. HB2 is a property rights issue. The town does not have the right to tell you who can use the bathroom on your private property," Benton said.
