MAY 9, 2005 -- The Plaza East shopping center is known as the gateway to Wrightsville Beach. That's because it's right in the center of the two main roads leading to the sand. It's an attractive spot that's already grabbed the attention of Harris Teeter.
Crews started tearing down Plaza East Monday. The new shopping center will be called Lumina Commons. The grocery store Harris Teeter, virtually next door at the Galleria shopping center, plans to move in. It's slated to open in about a year.
There's also 15,000 square feet of vacant retail space. The president of this project says they wanted to redevelop the shopping center to improve business.
They're going for a coastal look and hope to attract residents living in Wrightsville Beach as well as Landfall and Greenville Sound.
There are several businesses including a pizza and ice cream shop that have been moved to the other side of the complex during demolition. They hope to have everything complete by next spring. The price tag for this project is ten million dollars.
