WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Behind a career-high 19 kills from Maddy Kline, UNCW, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, topped preseason favorite Hofstra, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19), on Sunday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks evened their record at 1-1 in the league and improved to 11-3 overall. The Pride, meanwhile, dipped to 10-5 and 0-2 with their second consecutive loss.

Kline, who held match-high honors, finished with a .356 average and did not commit a hitting error in the final three sets. She added eight digs and three blocks as UNCW posted a 12-8 advantage at the net.

Nicole Lott added 10 kills and 12 digs for the Seahawks in posting a double-double. Sydney Brock chipped in nine kills while freshman Kendall Bender held match-high honors with nine blocks.

Hofstra's Laura Masciullo collected 17 kills and Veronika Kostova and Michela Rucli had 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Hannah Klemm doled out 27 assists and Luisa Domingues had 15 digs.

How it happened: After dropping the first set and hitting .000, the Seahawks came alive offensively and hit .270 in the second set, .323 in the third and .368 in the final set.

Notes: The win was the first for UNCW at home against the Pride since the 2013 season ... UNCW has won the last two meetings between the two programs, but Hofstra owns a 23-6, lead in the series ... Since moving into the starting lineup, Kendall Bender has posted 26 total blocks (2.17/set) ... Led by Alyssa Desjardins' three aces, UNCW racked up eight aces on the match for the third time this season ... Madison Peters came off the bench to hit .417 with five kills, no errors in 12 swings ... Bella Borgiotti had a season-high six blocks, one off her career-high.

Up next: UNCW opens a six-match road stand on Sept. 29 with a 7 p.m. start at Delaware.
