NHRMC to offer 3D mammography for breast exams

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - New Hanover Regional Medical Center will offer 3D mammography technology at five locations beginning Sept. 28.

The advanced breast cancer screening works by capturing multiple images from several angles, giving physicians a layer-by-layer view of breast tissue. This allows masses and distortions associated with breast cancers to be seen more clearly.

"We are excited to bring this technology to our patients," said David Parks, NHRMC Vice President of Cardiac and Clinical Support Services. "NHRMC is committed to the early detection of breast cancer and state-of-the-art care, and 3D mammography allows us to provide effective and high-quality imaging that patients deserve and expect."

Research from the Journal of the American Medical Association found that using 3D mammography exams for breast cancer screenings can lead to sustained and improved health outcomes and provide a 41 percent increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers, compared to 2D imagine alone. The 3D screenings also reduce false-positive recalls by up to 40 percent, according to NHRMC.

"The breast is a three-dimensional structure," says Dr. Adam Braithwaite, radiology specialist at NHRMC. "We slice through it and so where before we would see overlap of the sense fiber glandular tissue, now we can tease that tissue out look at the breast slice by slice and find little masses or areas of distortion that may be hiding in the breast," he adds.

All patients will have access to 3D mammography and 2D mammography if they request it. Medicare covers 100 percent of the cost of 3D screening mammography. Patients with commercial insurance should contact their insurance provider to determine if their plan covers 3D screening mammography. If 3D screening mammography is not covered by the insurance provider, there will be an additional fee for the 3D exams.

The following NHRMC Health & Diagnostics locations will offer 3D mammography:
·         NHRMC Medical Mall
·         Military Cutoff
·         North
·         Brunswick Forest
·         Rocky Point
