WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Whether it is to save calories or save money, the majority of college students have engaged in some kind of “drunkorexic” behavior, and it has health experts concerned.

Katrin Wesner, UNCW Student Health Center Director, said studies show eight out of 10 students have purposely skipped meals before drinking alcoholic beverages.

"Any time you don't eat in order to drink for example, you're missing out on all the nutrients of the food that you're eating,” Wesner said. “The other piece is it's important to eat before you drink because there is some protective benefit of having food in your stomach. So you might have a higher blood alcohol concentration from less alcohol if you haven't eaten.”

Some students also drink on an empty stomach to feel the effects of alcohol more quickly.

Wesner said whatever the reason, it’s a dangerous habit.

“We really encourage students to eat before they go out drinking, especially a meal that’s got some protein in it so that you do have some food in your stomach,” Wesner said. “To alternate drinks, so maybe have a glass of water, have a drink, have a glass of water to pace yourself. You don’t need to do all your drinking very quickly. Then to set a limit and stick with that.”

Wesner said the student health center also offers resources for students struggling with drinking habits.
