WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said three suspects have been arrested in connection to a shooting in Wilmington Tuesday that left one bystander injured.
Veshon Shaw, 23, Jaquarius Washington, 17, and Nasir Leonard, 16, each made an appearance in a New Hanover County courtroom Wednesday afternoon. All three suspects were given $1 million bonds.
According to officials, the shooting was first reported around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Grathwol Drive and North Kerr Avenue near Deer Brook Apartments.
Officials said several shots were fired by different suspects during the incident.
A 38-year-old man, who was traveling with his 8-year-old son whom he had just picked up from Wilmington Christian Academy, was hit in the abdomen by gunfire. He was taken to NHRMC for treatment and his condition isn't known at this time.
Sheriff Ed McMahon and District Attorney Ben David spoke to reporters following the trio's court appearances. McMahnon credits Wilmington police officers for pulling over a vehicle that matched the description of the one believed to be involved in the shooting.
Inside the vehicle, officers found that both Leonard and Washington were in possession of illegal handguns along with heroin and marijuana.
Shaw, Washington, and Leonard were taken into custody and are facing several gun and drug offenses.
North Kerr Avenue between MLK Parkway and Grathwol Drive was temporarily closed as authorities investigated the shooting.
Two of the suspects are validated gang members while the third is considered an associate, McMahon explained.
McMahon also said that investigators are looking for others involved in the shooting. "I'm telling the community right now that is unacceptable. We will not tolerate that type of activity," McMahon said.
The investigation is still ongoing and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
