WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) -

Ryan Young died in a car accident nearly eight years ago, but friends, family and swim clubs continue to remember her by doing what she loved.

The 12th annual Pier-to-Pier swim race kicked off Saturday morning in honor of Young, who swam for UNCW. Proceeds from the event went to the Cape Fear Aquatics Club and Wilmington Family YMCA.

Hundreds of swimmers took on the Wrightsville Beach waves, starting at Crystal Pier and crossing the finish line near Johnnie Mercer's Pier. Organizers say the distance between the two piers is about two miles.

In college, Young babysat for Haley Bolduc, the daughter of a UNCW professor. Bolduc spent over a year on her senior project, building a bench in remembrance of Young.

"She passed away in a car accident so it's just kind of to inform people I guess of how dangerous it is," said Bolduc. "Just so her memory could be here because her parents live in Virginia. So people could walk along the beach and remember her."

If you would like to see the bench, it is on the beach at Access 20 off of East Asheville Road.
