DENTON, Texas - Kristen Powell and Sydney Brock combined for 23 kills as UNCW swept Indiana State (25-18, 25-18, 27-25) in the first match of the North Texas Invitational on Friday at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The Seahawks ran their record to 6-1 with their fourth consecutive win while Indiana State dropped to 4-3.
Powell held match-high honors with 12 kills while Brock, who is a native of Dallas, Texas, added 11 kills of her own. Brock tied UNCW's single-match record with a .733 hitting average, with no hitting errors in 15 attacks.
Setter Alyssa Desjardins, also a native of the Dallas area, led the Seahawks with 19 assists and 12 digs. Joining her in double-digit digs were Nicole Lott and Sydney Alvis with 10 digs a piece.
ISU's Bree Spangler finished with eight kills and nine digs. The Sycamores were out-hit, .315-.147, and out-blocked, 8-5.
How it happened: UNCW cruised through the first two sets winning by identical scores of 25-18. In the third set, Indiana State rallied from a 23-20 deficit to claim a 25-24 advantage. Brock tied the set with a kills and Powell's 12th kill of the match gave UNCW a 26-25 lead. An ISU hitting error on match point gave UNCW the win.
