Seahawk volleyball drops first match in loss to Davidson

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Nicole Lott paced the Seahawks with 10 kills, but Davidson swept homestanding UNCW, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-16), in the final match of the Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Hanover Hall on Sunday.

The Wildcats (1-2) picked up their first win of the season while the Seahawks (2-1) suffered their first loss.

Heading up the Wildcats was Emily Franklin, an all-tournament selection, who collected seven kills and three aces. Sarah Fink held match-high honors with 11 kills.

Tournament most valuable player Alyssa Desjardins of UNCW, had 25 assists on the match and added eight digs. Adding eight kills apiece were Kristen Powell and Sydney Brock.

How it happened: The Wildcats hit .315 for the match, including a .583 (15-1-24) mark in the final set. UNCW committed eight service errors and was whistled for six ball-handling errors.

Notes: Davidson out-blocked UNCW, 5-2 … The Wildcats committed just nine hitting errors … Ciera Cockrell had seven kills for DC … The Seahawks trail the all-time series, 9-8.

All-Tournament team: MVP: Alyssa Desjardins (UNCW); Nicole Lott (UNCW); Sydney Brock (UNCW), Jessica Armstrong (Jacksonville); Mackenzie Swan (Jacksonville); Lourdes Rosario (Winthrop); Emily Franklin (Davidson).

Up next: The Seahawks visit Boone, N.C., for the Black & Gold Invitational beginning on Sept. 2. UNCW opens its tournament appearance that evening with a 7 p.m. start against host, Appalachian State.
