WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - With kids heading back to school this week there are so many things to think about at one time, whether it be new clothes, school supplies, or maybe what to start buying to prepare for school lunches.
Registered Dietitian and owner of Nutrition in Motion, Sonia Kennedy shared some ideas for packing a healthy and creative lunch, especially when dealing with a picky eater.
If you aren't sure how to start Kennedy suggests to go beyond the basics of what you would normally buy, look for things you can use to play up the presentation and make the meal more appetizing. She also recommended Bento boxes, which are
- Mix things up
- Take time with new foods
- Make food fun, especially vegetables – example “Going fishing” (cut up carrots, peanut butter and goldfish in separate bowls; kids dip carrots in peanut butter and then fish for crackers).
There are also those who just love fast food, and may not be eating what is packed for them.
- For fast food lovers you can re-create healthier versions of the foods at home.
- A favorite is a pizza wrap or chicken nuggets.
