ORANGEBURG, South Carolina – Freshman forward Nikki Cox recorded the first hat trick of her college career by scoring three goals as UNCW earned its second consecutive shutout with a 7-0 victory over South Carolina State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who have outscored their opponents by a 10-0 margin in two games, improved to 2-0-0 on the season while handing South Carolina State its second straight shutout loss to begin the year.

“It was a great team victory on the road today,” Coach Paul Cairney said. “Give credit to South Carolina State. They remain organized and battled for the full 90 minutes. It was good to see different players step up and get minutes for a lot of players. We will reflect on what we did well today, but put this game behind us and get ready for an outstanding Navy team on Friday at home.”

After junior forward Serenity Waters gave the Seahawks a quick 1-0 lead in the second minute, Cox tallied three consecutive goals over a 46-minute span to increase the advantage to 4-0 with 32:47 left in the second half.

Freshman Cassidy Overstreet upped the margin to 5-0 in the 77th minute when she scored off a feed for her second goal in as many games. The Seahawks added goals from sophomore Blair Pearce and junior Meg Salvadore in the closing minute to complete the scoring.

Senior goalkeepers Carolyn Huddy and Liisa Rahkola combined to make three saves for the Seahawks. Huddy posted one save in the first half while Rahkola tallied two saves in the second half.

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Brittingham recorded six saves for the Bulldogs, who were outshot by a 25-6 margin.

Up Next: The Seahawks return home to UNCW Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 26, to face Navy at 7 p.m.
