WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

UNCW alum Katie Beal, her husband, and their 7-month-old daughter were rescued from rapidly rising flood waters outside their home in Denham Springs, LA, over the weekend.

Beal said their vehicles and newly-built home, which they bought last year, were destroyed.

According to Beal, they stood on top of a vehicle waiting for rescuers but said the water continued to rise.

"We weren't sure we were going to be rescued before the water got over the car so we swam about halfway out of the neighborhood until we made it to a boat," she said.

Beal's parents live in Kure Beach. Her mother, Rebecca McEntire, plans to travel down to Louisiana later this week.

“I think she’s a little in shock still," McEntire said. "She’s very tired. She’s very hopeful, right now her spirits are up. She knows that she’s not alone in this, that there are several other who are experiencing this same kind of losses. Today she said she still couldn’t get into the neighborhood to see what the damage is but next step is we’re going to go down and take her a car and start getting into the house and seeing what can be salvaged.”

Beal said she's currently staying with a friend's parents. She said her home is not in a flood zone, so she did not have flood insurance.

"I'm sure there are so many others that were not as fortunate as us, but we still have a lot of work and recovery ahead of us," Beal said.

Her friends are now raising money for Beal.
