WILMINGTON, NC-- A successful 2016 season for the Wilmington Sharks (32-23) came to a sour conclusion on Wednesday night as the Wilson Tobs (31-24) put together an offensive showcase to beat the Sharks 14-1.
There wasn't much offense for the Sharks, with their lone run coming on a solo homer from Madison Stokes (South Carolina). Outside of that, the Sharks spread seven hits across five innings and never mounted much of a comeback. They were down early, as Wilson scored at least one in innings two through five, before a big, five run seventh inning.
The Sharks decided to make it a "pitch by committee" day on the mound, but it didn't matter. The Tobs had an answer for almost every one of the seven pitchers they threw out there. Kyler Stout (Oral Roberts) struck out the side in the eighth, and Ryan Kelly (St. Joseph's) struck out two more in the ninth, but the Tobs put crooked numbers for almost every other Shark pitcher.
The win went to Zack Mozingo (3-1). He threw six innings, with six hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts. Shelton Perkins (2-1) took the loss, pitching two innings, allowing three runs, on four hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
