Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump sat down with WECT Anchor Jon Evans for a few minutes before taking the stage in Trask Coliseum for his campaign rally in Wilmington Tuesday. This is what he had to say.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: One of the big things I heard you talk about yesterday was the Obama, Clinton energy regulations. A lot of people around here are concerned about off-shore drilling. Where do you stand as a part of your energy program?
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: We want to make sure the people around here, because they are the ones that really have to really put up with it, we want to make sure they're okay with it, and I know there's a lot of anxiety from the people in the surrounding area, and I want to make sure they're okay with it. That would be very important to me.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: Beach renourishment. Federal funding had been dropped in recent years and people say more is going to be cut. Do you think the federal government should play a major role in beach renourishment?
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: I do and you need if very badly here because it's such a tourist area. You need it very, very badly. I do, and it will happen if I become president, believe me. I know they basically approved it here and you never got the money, and you're suffering because of it. We'll make sure it happens.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: You know about bringing people into locations, so you're the guy to bring in visitors - you know how important it is.
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: I do. It's very important. And that's a very important thing, and it's also jobs in all fairness, it's jobs. Not only the people who do it but the people who come because of it. So, I'm a big fan.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: What about voter ID? Do you think voters should have to show a valid ID before they cast a ballot?
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: I was very upset when I heard about that ruling. I think that ruling is just an incorrect ruling. I think voter ID is a good thing, not a bad thing. I was surprised that in North Carolina that happened. And many states are going the other way they want strong voter ID and in North Carolina, where we're doing very well - the crowds are so incredible. I'm going out right now after I finish with you and into a room with thousands and thousands of people and thousands outside who can't get in. I think that most of those people would agree that voter ID is very important.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: You have said that you believe that transgender individuals should be able to use the bathroom of their gender identity. And I think you've also said you think it's a state's thing, so where do you stand on this? Do you think it's a civil rights issue?
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: Well, what I really think is that states should make the decision. And that's happening more and more throughout the country now and states should, it's a state's issue, and they should make the decision. And I know there are some difficulties in North Carolina and it's all going to get worked out, but I think it's the states should make the decision.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: Last question for you sir. I know Mrs. Clinton yesterday accepted the invitations to the debates, will you be debating her?
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: Yes, I will be and I look forward to it. And I want to see what the rules and regulations of the debate are, but subject to that I would certainly do that, I want to do it. I've had a lot of fun in the debate process in the primaries, I'm sure this will be a very interesting experience. But no, we want to do it. I want to see what the rules and regulations are though before i formally commit.
WECT Anchor Jon Evans: Welcome to Wilmington. Enjoy your time here.
Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump: Thank you. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
