Firefighters Battle Huge Landfill Fire

APRIL 27, 2005 -- Firefighters are trying to pinpoint the cause of a large landfill fire early Wednesday morning, but they have an idea of what sparked it.

Three New Hanover County fire stations battled the flames on Highway 421 North for more than two hours.

The fire started around 12:30am. It grew to more than 100 feet by 100 feet in size.

According to authorities on the scene, the garbage at the landfill constantly gives off heat during the decomposition process. They suspect that heat ignited something, but they are looking into other causes.
