LELAND, NC (WECT) - A home in the Waterford community in Leland is considered a total loss following a fire Tuesday evening.

According to officials, the incident was first reported in the 1200 block of Nightingale Court around 4:45 p.m.

Officials at the scene considered the home a total loss following the fire.

Initial findings show that lightning was the cause of the fire.

"It is highly probably that is what the cause of the fire is," stated Brian Watts with Brunswick County Emergency Services. "If the weather service is saying go inside stay inside by all means do that, heed the warnings and do what they tell you to do."

One woman reportedly lived at the home with her animals, but she wasn't home at the time of the fire. Official said her dogs did not survive.

The house fire in Leland was not the only call first responders received Tuesday night due to the heavy storms that rolled through the Leland and Wilmington areas.

"It's not normal for this many calls at one time to go on,with so many calls going on their were other calls that fire fighters had to come from other areas,"stated Watts." [There were] several trees down and several places where there was water across the road and flooding."
