WILMINGTON, NC-- The two teams started the game even, but it didn't stay that way long as the Peninsula Pilots (23-10, 4-3) quickly put up seven runs in the first inning to defeat the Wilmington Sharks’ (21-14, 5-3) on Wednesday night by a score of 11-1.
The Pilots got off to a hot start in just the top of the first inning, as they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to get an early lead. The Sharks couldn’t answer nearly all game. Their best chance came in the seventh inning, when they loaded the bases with two away. A groundout ended the inning, and left the Sharks run column empty.
The Pilots added a few more, and made the score 11-0 headed to the bottom of the ninth. Several Shark pitchers got their chance to hit, but Kyler Stout (Oral Roberts) stole the show. He hit a solo home run out of left field to give the Sharks their only run of the game.
The win went to Devin Mahoney (3-0). He threw five innings, with three hits, no runs, one walk and no strikeouts. Evan Eubanks (2-1) took the loss, pitching five and one third of an inning, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 12 hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Sharks will be at home again on Thursday, when the Holly Springs Salamanders come to town. They’ll travel to Wilson on Friday, before hosting them on Saturday.
