WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

It's one of the most popular attractions in our area, the USS North Carolina Battleship. But it’s not the only vessel to carry that name.

Since it was decommissioned, three other vessels have been named for the state.

The current boat is the USS North Carolina (SSN 777), a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Commander Gary Montalvo and his crew stopped in Wilmington Wednesday on what the Navy calls a namesake visit.

They spoke to Mayor Bill Saffo and city council, about the crew’s recent work to keep our country safe.

They also stopped by our studios for WECT News First at Four.
