COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Contractors with the NCDOT will begin work replacing a bridge in Hallsboro in Columbus County on Tuesday, July 5.

The project, which costs around $950,000, is part of an $11.6 million contract to replace 16 bridges throughout the county.

As a result of the project, Sam Potts Highway (NC 214) from Pierce Road to School Road will be closed until early December. Local residents will still be able to access their homes up to the actual bridge location.

The current bridge over Bogue Swamp was built in 1921, making it one of the oldest bridges in Columbus County.

DOT officials suggest the following detour:

  • For motorists departing on the east side of the bridge, take Sam Potts Highway (NC 214) to Pierce Road, turn right to Giles Byrd Road, turn right to Hallsboro Road, then turn right to return to Sam Potts Highway.
  • For motorists departing on the west side of the bridge, take Sam Potts Highway (NC 214) to Hallsboro Road, turn left on Giles Byrd Road, then left on Pierce Road to Sam Potts Highway.
