Trailing 4-2, the Wilmington Sharks (6-6) put together a three-run eighth inning to give them a lead they would keep in an 8-4 win over the Morehead City Marlins (7-5) on Tuesday.
In the second inning, Chris Graham (UNC Greensboro) hit an RBI single to left field and Ward Coleman (Davidson) brought home a run on a bases-loaded walk to give the Sharks an early 2-0 lead. The Marlins got one back in the third, but couldn’t take the lead until Michael Druhan (Spring Hill) hit a two-run home run to put the Marlins in front, 3-2.
A dropped third strike allowed Morehead City to add some insurance in the seventh, but the Sharks wouldn’t be kept quiet anymore. With two on, Ward Coleman dropped a sacrifice bunt that was overthrown into right and two runners scored. Cletis Avery (Presbyterian) hit an RBI single to give Wilmington the lead. The Sharks weren’t done yet, as they added three more runs in the eighth, including two from a Ward Coleman double.
The win went to Evan Eubanks (1-0). He tossed one inning, allowing one run on three hits, and struck out two. Patrick LaGanke (1-1) took the loss, pitching 1 2/3 innings and surrendering four runs on two hits and two walks.
The Sharks will travel to Fayetteville on Wednesday to face the Swampdogs. They’ll be back home on Thursday to host Morehead City again, during which it’ll be Thirsty Thursday. Both games will start at 7:05.
