NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A community is in mourning today as they lay a fallen firefighter to rest.
Cpt. Bradley Long gave his life earlier this week in search of a missing swimmer on Lake Norman. Several fire departments from across the state are planning to attend his memorial service today, including representatives from the New Hanover County Fire Department.
New Hanover County Deputy Matt Davis said the department will be attending Long's funeral because they know what it's like to lose one of their own. He also said it is important to support their fellow firefighters because no matter where they are from, they are still a family.
Long's memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Mt. View Baptist Church in Maiden, NC. He served as a firefighter with the Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue and the Newton Fire Department.
Since Long's death in the line of duty on June 6, officials said more 300 first responders from 35 departments in 10 different counties have arrived to work shifts for their fellow servicemen during their time of grief.
Long was 28 years old.
