(AP) - The soggy remnants of Florence keep causing chaos in coastal South Carolina long after the hurricane swirled ashore, with rivers still flowing far beyond their banks and a new storm gathering more rain just offshore. Authorities urged up to 8,000 people leave their homes in Georgetown County, on the South Carolina coast, as the Pee Dee and Waccamaw rivers overflowed with a record 10 feet of flooding reaching a crest in their communities Tuesday.

CLINTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina preacher and his wife have been jailed on separate charges related to an investigation that was triggered by the kidnapping of a 2-month-old baby. Citing a Laurens County sheriff's release, news outlets report 31-year-old Jennifer Bunting English was arrested Sept. 21 after the mother of the infant she was babysitting reported her child hadn't been returned and the babysitter stopped communicating.

GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - The family of a South Carolina woman who fell down an elevator shaft to her death has been awarded a $600,000 settlement. Rae Gilmore was a volunteer and dealer at Blackhorse Antiques who was in her 70s in 2015.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - After more than two decades as one of the South Carolina law enforcement community's most visible fixtures, the man known as "Trooper Bob" is hanging up his badge. Lt. Bob Beres tells The Associated Press he's retiring this fall after 24 years in the Patrol. His last day on the job will be November 30.
