PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Pender County Board of Education has named Carrie Armstrong as principal at Penderlea Elementary starting June 22.
Armstrong currently serves as principal of Seventy Fourth Street Elementary in St. Petersburg, FL.
A graduate of Swansboro High School and a former UNCW student, Armstrong is excited to return to Southeastern North Carolina.
"Running a K-8 has been a dream of mine," Armstrong said. "I have a passion for both grade spans and a vision of how well students and staff can work together through all of those years. In the K-8 setting you can see how critical primary literacy skills are and build upon those skills through the middle grades."
Armstrong earned her master's degree in educational leadership from the University of South Florida and a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland. Officials said she has experience as a school administrator at both the elementary and middle school levels.
Armstrong said she's excited to meet the staff, students, and community of Penderlea. "I've been told how family-oriented Penderlea is and how engrained the school is in the community. I'm excited to become a part of that."
School staff will host a meet-and-greet community event for parents, students and staff to get to know Armstrong in June.
