SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA (WECT) - Looking for fresh, local produce? Several farmers' markets are getting underway.
According to a news releases, the Columbus County Farmers' Market opens May 14 at 7 a.m. at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville. The market will feature farm fresh green peas, squash, onions, cucumbers, radish, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard, potatoes and more.
"We have had some beautiful spring weather so far this year and there should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh produce on opening day," said Carol Shuman, market manager. "We will be open on Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. during the 2016 season."
According to localharvest.org, the Riverfront Farmers'Market offers two locations - Downtown Wilmington on Saturdays and Ogden Park on Wednesdays. Both locations will feature fresh, flavorful and unique products from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Poplar Grove Plantation Farmers' Market also takes place Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Poplar Grove is located on Highway 17 North at Scotts Hill.
The Carolina Beach Farmers' Market boasts local fruits and vegetables, dairy products, wines, meats, baked goods and natural soaps, as well as live music. It takes places Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. along the lake shore.
The farmers' market at Wrightsville Beach has craft vendors in addition to fresh produce in a social atmosphere located at 321 Causeway Drive. It takes place Mondays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
