RICHMOND, Virginia – UNCW freshman infielder Rachel Willis has been named as the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie-of-the-Week following the Seahawks' doubleheader sweep at Drexel on Saturday.
Willis is the second UNCW player in as many weeks to earn the award after freshman Haley Lenderman was recognized after helping the Seahawks to a CAA series victory over Elon.
"Rachel has spent a lot of extra time hitting and is one of our most committed hitters," Coach Kristy Nortonsaid. "We are happy to see her recognized for her recent success. We are looking forward to seeing how she continues to improve her game and help our team this weekend."
In leading the Seahawks to a pair of wins over Drexel last weekend, the Angier, N.C., native went 5-for-8 at the plate with the first two home runs of her college career in addition to two runs batted in. She hit a home run in each contest as the Seahawks extended their win streak to four straight games.
The Seahawks' fourth-leading hitter with a .262 average, Willis has started 37-of-43 games this season and ranks third on the squad with 19 runs scored.
UNCW, which has a 29-19 overall record and an 8-8 mark in CAA play, finishes the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Towson.
