WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Top-seeded and 67th-ranked UNCW began its quest for the 2016 CAA Men's Tennis Championship by crushing No. 8 Delaware, 4-0, on Friday in one of four quarterfinal matchups on the opening day of the three-day event.
The Seahawks bumped their record to 11-8 with the easy victory over the 3-14 Blue Hens at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center and will face defending champion William & Mary, the fourth seed, in the semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m. No. 2 Charleston meets No. 3 Elon in the other semifinal pairing.
UNCW advanced to the CAA semifinals for the ninth consecutive season with Friday's victory and dropped just 15 games in sweeping the first four singles matches.
Senior Christiaan Van der Burgh got things going for the Seahawks by rolling past UD's Tyler Flematti, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and CAA Player-of-the-Year Santtu Leskinen made the score 2-0 with an identical result against Mike Furr at the top of the lineup.
Freshman Aviv Ben Shabat then increased the margin to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2, decision over Venkatesh Ramkumar at the No. 4 slot before fellow rookie Agustin Savarino clinched the match for the second time this season with a 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 3 singles.
