WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A local doctor will be recognized for his work to care for those with Type 1 diabetes.
Paul C. Whitesides, Jr., M.D., will be presented with the JDRF Coastal Carolina Branch's 2016 Living and Giving Award at the 2016 Hope Gala.
Dr. Whitesides is known for being a local pioneer in diabetes care. He was the first endocrinologist to establish a specialized diabetes practice in the Wilmington region.
He will joined us Friday on WECT News First at Four to talk about his work and the future of diabetes care.
"It is an honor to present this award to someone who has dedicated his career to providing treatment and care for those affected by Type 1 locally," said Erin Mabry, director, JDRF Coastal Carolina Branch. "We are grateful for the time and effort Dr. Whitesides has contributed to JDRF, and the difference he has made in the lives of the patients and families who struggle with the effects of Type 1 diabetes. We look forward to celebrating Dr. Whitesides' contributions to our local community, as well as to the broader Type 1 community, at this year's Hope Gala."
Whitesides moved to Wilmington in 1982, where he started his endocrine practice. Most recently, he practiced with Wilmington Health until his retirement in 2015.
The Hope Gala takes place Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Wilmington Convention Center. WECT News and FOX Wilmington anchor Jon Evans will be the Master of Ceremonies for the gala. The Bibis Ellison Band will perform at the event.
