WILMINGTON (UNCW) -

UNCW officials want to add some big upgrades to its track and field facility, but are asking for help from the city and county. UNCW estimates the costs of repairs would total between $1.2 and $1.5 million.

Facility upgrades would include resurfacing of the track, landscape and hardscape upgrades, as well as a new restroom/field house structure.

UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli and his staff spoke to Wilmington City Council at their agenda briefing Monday. They asked council to consider contributing $300,000 for the project. With that partnership, Vice Chancellor Eddie Stuart said the track could be a huge benefit to everyone, not just student athletes.

"It just makes sense to explore this possibility to work together to provide an opportunity for our community to have a facility that both the university and the community deserve so that's why we're looking for partners so to speak," Stuart said.

UNCW officials are also seeking $500,000 from New Hanover County. The rest of the money is expected to come from university donors.
