MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

In response to a suspected serial rapist plaguing Memphis apartment complexes, Memphis Police Department released safety tips for women living in apartments.

The tips are designed as suggestions for women who are looking for ways to keep themselves safe.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings, pay attention to what is going on around you.
  2. When going and coming to your vehicle and home, make sure you are prepared with your keys in your hand.
  3. Don't be distracted when entering or exiting your residence. Put you phone down and pay attention.
  4. While at home, keep your windows and doors locked.
  5. Keep your blinds/curtains closed to onlookers.
  6. If you have a sliding glass door, utilize extra security by securing the door with a security bar.
  7. Leave a light on in the residence at all times.
  8. If possible, install a security alarm and/or video surveillance system to the residence.
  9. Utilize motion lights to the exterior of your residence.
  10. Talk with neighbors and organize a neighborhood watch groups. Nosy neighbors are best!
  11. Those living in apartment complexes should also speak with their apartment managers and inquire on what security measures they're taking.
  12. And always remember if something looks suspicious, call police.

First-time apartment renter Laura Mason said she makes sure to look out for her neighbors.

"I see my neighbor and I know she stays by herself. So I will always alert her to things that I have seen," Mason said.

These tips aren't solely for women. MPD said being more observant and conscious of your surroundings can be a benefit to anyone, regardless of gender.

"If they put out tips that allow you to live a little longer and live safer in your environment, I think it should be done," Kendrick Robertson said.

MPD has released information on all of the incidents they believe to be related. The victims were all females between the ages of 22 and 46.
