WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW held off Coastal Carolina, 3-2, in the final dual of the UNCW Invitational to complete a 2-0 day on Saturday at the Dig & Dive Grille. The Seahawks opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Stevenson.
With the two wins, UNCW improved to 7-10 on the season while Stevenson and Coastal Carolina dropped to 1-6 and 2-6, respectively.
In the finale, UNCW opened the dual with wins in the fourth and fifth positions before Coastal Carolina rallied to win in the first two spots. The pair of Bella Borgiotti and Katie McCullough opened their match with a 21-12 win, but were pushed in the second set, knocking off CCU’s Leah Hardman and Carla Cahill, 29-27 to win the match and give UNCW the dual win.
The Seahawks cruised to a quick 5-0 win over Stevenson to open the day. Four of the five pairs were sweeps with the exception of Bella Borgiotti and Katie McCullough, who edged Samantha Perillo and Sara Bollinger, 15-9, in the third set. Ashleigh Crutcher and Maddy Kline clinched the win for UNCW in the third position with a 21-5 & 21-9, win.
The tournament wraps up on Sunday with a pairs tournament beginning at 9 a.m.
