WILMINGTON (UNCW) -

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra’s annual Free Family Concert continues its tradition of giving talented young musicians an opportunity to perform with a symphony orchestra.

According to a news release, that tradition began in 1976 with Dr. Richard R. Deas, whose memory lives on with the WSO’s student concerto competition. He helped create the WSO in 1971 as the Chair of the UNCW Department for Music.

Amelia Smith won the 39th Annual competition, named for Deas.

The Free Family Concert will feature the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings, as well as a solo performance from the 12-year-old Smith. Smith has studied violin since the age of three and has attended the Lamar Stringfield Honors Music Camp at Meredith College.

The concert takes place Sunday, Apr. 24 at 4 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium at UNCW.
