WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The celebration of the installation of UNC Wilmington Chancellor Zito Sartarelli Thursday is expected to cost $75,000, although university officials say no taxpayer money will be used.
"In keeping with his values as a leader and a citizen, Chancellor Sartarelli was insistent that his Installation remain modest and of no cost whatsoever to the state. The budget for this Installation was set at $75K, which will be paid entirely through an unrestricted endowment and no state funds," Janine Iammuno, Executive Director of the Office of University Relations, said in an emailed statement. "Like with any major event, final costs can't be determined until after the event has taken place, and as previously demonstrated, transparency is a cornerstone of this chancellor's administration. The figures will be shared with the public immediately upon their availability, as indicated when the initial media request was made yesterday. We are focused on officially ushering in this new era for UNCW and are eager to celebrate the occasion with the community tomorrow morning."
The installation ceremony takes place Thursday at 10:30 a.m. on the campus of UNCW. That will be followed by a picnic. Both events are open to the community, but registration is required.
Sartarelli started in the position last summer, succeeding Gary Miller, who took a similar position in Wisconsin. Miller's ceremony was expected to cost around $85,000, but university officials say the total cost of that ceremony ran closer to $140,000.
