NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The annual list of delinquent taxpayers in New Hanover County includes the mayor of Wilmington.

Mayor Bill Saffo explained that he wasn't aware that his name ended up among the hundreds on this year's list.

Saffo said he, his ex-wife and sister in law were in the process of selling some property late last year, when the closing was delayed into 2016, and the bill for $1,788.96 has since been paid.

This year, Saffo joins 3,633 others on the list, totaling nearly $3.8 million.

Getting your name published in the local newspaper does inspire some to pay the bills, although county officials say it's hard to quantify the direct relation between the publication and payments. By law, local governments are required to publish the list.

In years past, county officials would contact prominent citizens to give them a heads up that their name was about to appear in the newspaper on the delinquent taxpayers list.

A county spokesperson says since taking over the role of County Manager, Chris Coudriet has never reviewed the tax list nor given warnings to citizens that they are on the list.
