WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The 2016 Anders Tellstrom Scholarship, awarded by Cochlear, is a national scholarship that was awarded to only 3 people nationwide, and this year a local UNCW student was one of the winners.

McKenna Nelson has suffered from hearing loss in her left ear since birth, but that hasn’t stopped her from reaching her goals.

"I don't have the middle ear,” said Nelson, “The 3 little bones that kind of magnify the hearing, I am missing those."

Cochlear developed a hearing aid to fit her needs, and helped her hear for the first time out of her left ear.

"When I heard for the first time, I cried,” said Nelson. “I hugged my mom, my sister, and my dad. I just felt so thankful."

Cochlear not only gave her a hearing aid, but they also gave her financial aid.

Nelson will now receive 2,000 a year, from the 2016 Anders Tellstrom Scholarship.

"All of the hard work that I've gone through, getting the hearing aid, and having the infections, it all seemed worth it because I got this scholarship," said Nelson.

Nelson is currently a Sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and plans to become a special education teacher after graduation.
