The UNCW Men’s Basketball Team returned home champions Tuesday after winning the CAA title in Baltimore.
The Seahawks defeated Hofstra University 80-73 in overtime Monday.
Head Coach Kevin Keatts said players kept their composure to play until the end.
“I’m happy for these guys,” Keatts said. “You talk about the hard work that these players have put in, these assistant coaches, and then you talk about the city of Wilmington and the school. We deserve to be on a bigger stage and I’m so excited for everyone involved in this.”
Dozens of fans waited on campus to welcome the team home.
“This is great,” C.J. Gettys, center, said. “It’s great support. It’s something we haven’t seen here in a while, bringing back championships. Just to have this many people supporting us shows that we have people behind us, and it gives us a reason to work hard.”
Keatts said the team will take a few days to rest, but the Seahawks are looking forward to the NCAA Tournament.
“Just to stay focused,” Craig Ponder, guard, said. “That’s the biggest thing right now at this point in the year. Coach preaches on that all the time. The teams that can stay focused at this point in the year are the teams that will keep moving forward. Certainly we’re not satisfied with making the tournament. We also want to make a run in the tournament.”
