By securing a Colonial Athletic Association tournament championship Monday night in Baltimore, UNCW Head Men's Basketball Coach Kevin Keatts also locked in tens of thousands of dollars in contractual bonuses.
Keatts, in his second year as head coach of the Seahawks, earned at least $75,000 Monday night in extra income by achieving performance incentives.
The regular season conference championship already secured a $25,000 bonus for Coach Keatts, but securing the tournament championship Monday guaranteed another $25,000. By winning the CAA tournament, UNCW is guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament next week. Keatts will earn $25,000 for each game the Seahawks play in the tournament.
Coach Keatts is also eligible to earn $25,000 if UNCW is ranked in the top 100 for the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which ranks each team. The RPI is used in determining the field for the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday. Heading into this weekend, UNCW was ranked 49th in the RPI and a weekend of wins will only increase UNCW's position and solidify the bonus.
Keatts could also earn additional compensation with a percentage of any season ticket sales in excess of $185,000.
Last July, UNCW extended Keatts' contract an additional year through March 2020. The coach would be obligated to pay UNCW liquidated damages if he terminates the deal prior to this April.
Keatts was honored last Thursday as the first coach in CAA history to achieve back-to-back Coach of the Year honors. Heading into the NCAA tournament, UNCW is 25-7.
