UNCW softball splits Sunday games


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Junior outfielder Merritt Wilkinson posted three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs as UNCW earned a split of its final two games at the Hampton Inn University Area Seahawk Softball Classic against Bucknell and N.C. Central at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who upped their record to 10-4, overcame a 5-0 loss against Bucknell in the first game by defeating N.C. Central by a 10-0 count in a five-inning affair to close out the tournament. Bucknell claimed an 8-0 victory over N.C. Central in the first game in six innings.

After posting a hit in the loss against Bucknell, Wilkinson added a 2-for-3 performance against N.C. Central with a run scored while driving in four runs. She also posted a double in each contest, giving her four doubles in the last six games.

Junior catcher Nella Chamblee also tallied three hits in the doubleheader, going 2-for-3 against Bucknell before adding a single in the win over N.C. Central.

Sophomore Kelsey Bryan and senior Erin Brown also contributed two hits and two runs apiece.

Freshman pitcher Lacey Fox earned the first win of her college career against N.C. Central after allowing just two hits in 3.1 innings.

How It Happened vs. Bucknell: The Bison scored a single run in the first and third innings before upping their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the fifth inning. Senior Dana Nielsen threw a complete-game shutout for Bucknell, allowing just three hits while upping her record to 3-1 on the season.

How It Happened vs. N.C. Central: The Seahawks erupted for six runs in the second inning, including a two-run double by Wilkinson and a two-run single by sophomore Sarah Davis, before adding four more runs in the third inning.

#SeahawkStats: Bucknell limited UNCW to 1-for-17 with runners on base and 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position … However, the Seahawks responded by hitting 10-for-18 with runners on base against N.C. Central and 8-for-12 with runners in scoring position … Chamblee extended her hitting streak to six consecutive games while upping her streak of consecutive games reaching base safely to 10 in a row … In five games this weekend, Chamblee went 9-for-16 (.563) at the plate … Wilkinson has also hit safely in four straight contests … Freshman Haley Lenderman lowered her earned run average to 0.28 on the season after not allowing an earned run in 6.1 innings this weekend, including a 1.2-inning relief outing against N.C. Central.
