UNCW softball drops weekend finale to Army


WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Freshman utility player Rachel Willis had three hits and drove in a run, but it was not enough as UNCW finished play at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Seahawk Softball Bash with a 3-1 loss against Army West Point in the tournament finale at Boseman Field on Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Seahawks' record to 2-2 on the season while Army collected its first victory while improving to 1-4 on the season.

Sophomore Kristen McPeek led Army to the victory by going 2-for-4 while driving in two runs. Freshman Mae Wadyka and junior Alee Rashenkas also posted a pair of hits for the Black Knights, who outhit UNCW by a 10-6 margin.

Junior Caroline Smith earned her first win of the season in the circle after allowing just one run on six hits. Freshman Lacey Fox suffered the loss for the Seahawks, giving up two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

How It Happened: The Black Knights scored a single run in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. McPeek drove in the first run with a single through the left side in the first inning before adding another run on single up the middle in the third inning. UNCW trimmed the margin to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Willis drove in a run on an infield single with two outs, but the Seahawks could not complete the comeback.

Inside the Box Score: Army was 6-for-21 with runners on base and 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position … The teams combined to leave 16 runners on base … Smith recorded 15 ground ball outs in the win for Army … Three of the Seahawks' six hits came with two outs while Army was 4-for-11 in two-out situations.
